'Real Learning for Real Farming' is a new approach to location-specific technology generation and dissemination developed by PhilRice Batac. It emphasizes sustainable farming for the dry and drought-prone areas. Real learning is a unique approach that results to long-term retention and transformation. It is relational, experiential, applicable or learning what is appropriate, and learner-based. The authors' experience proved the effectiveness of this approach. Not only did the yield, income and farming systems approach of their farmer-partners improved but they are now also actively helping them in developing appropriate location-specific technologies in their farms, and transfering these technologies to other farmers. Thus, the authors are generating more location-specific technologies and reaching more farmers with the least cost. The confidence and self-esteem that the farmers developed through their constant participation also suggest sustainability. Collaboration, among PhilRice Batac, the LGUs and the farmers have also become stronger. With this success, the Bureau of Agricultural Research is now using the approach to enhance its Community-based Participatory Action Research/On-farm Research Program. It is also being used as the anchor model of the National Working Group for Sustainable Agriculture, a body composed of government agencies and non government organizations.
