Test cross nurseries (TCN) were established during the dry season (DS) and wet season (WS) of 2003 as part of a project at PhilRice to breed three-line hybrid varieties. Promising A x R combinations were selected based on degree of fertility restoration of the F1, panicle length, plant height, and tillering ability. Selectable hybrids numbered 105 from the DS and 160 from the WS TCN. Analysis of the DS results indicated that the number of filled grains (FG) per panicle in the F1 correlated positively and very significantly with spikelet number (SN) per panicle and panicle length (PL) of the hybrid. Correlation was negative and highly significant with spikelet fertility (SF) ratings. PL in the F1 was also significantly and linearly associated with both the height (HT) of the F1 and the male parent (MP). WS results extended the associations noted for the DS for FG of the F1 with the SN, FG, PL, and SF of the MP. However, PL of the hybrid showed significant correlation with the PL of the MP but not with HT of either the F1 or MP as previously noted.
