Evaluation of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrids for yield and yield components in central Punjab [Pakistan]

Seventeen sunflower hybrids were studied during spring 2002 in central Punjab, Pakistan. The results revealed that cross ORI-1 x RL-110 gave maximum heterobeltiosis (284.34%) for seed yield per plant. The cross ORI-43 x RL-10 produced maximum seed yield per plant (56.25 g) and was statistically at par with ORI-1 x RL-110. The cross combination ORI-2 x V-214 produced taller plants (143.00 cm), took maximum days (82) to flower initiation and flower completion (86.3). The same hybrid excelled in head diameter (18.20 cm) and number of leaves per plant (24.67). Maximum oil contents (48.53%) were observed in cross ORI-1 x RL-110 and maximum 100-seed weight (6.04 g) in cross combination ORI-43 x RL-84.
