The paper presents result of 3-year long studies carried out in parallel in two experimental facilities (Research Stations: Tomaszkowo and Balcyny - Poland) on very good rye soils. During the study the role of inter crop (Persian clover, red clover and ryegrass) sown in the spring into barley and ploughed in the autumn as the so-called green fertilizer influenced control of weeds in barley. The weed controlling role of intercrops was particularly clearly visible at the end of vegetation, the number and dry mass of weeds were lower than both in barley sown after barley (by 47 and 40 percent respectively)
