Determination of the response of mass-bred populations of pigs to selection based on on-farm tests of boar meatiness
2006
Eckert, R.,Instytut Zootechniki, Krakow (Poland)
The expected differences and actual differences were highly consistent in particular production regions, indicating that the mass population showed highly similar reactions to the use of boars of different slaughter value. It can therefore be assumed that current selection methods used by Polish breeders are useful for improving the slaughter value of pigs produces on commercial farms. The ranking of boars according to the meatiness evaluated on live animals was highly consistent with the ranking of boars according to the meatiness of their progeny tested in meat plants. This allows a conclusion that postmortem evaluation of progeny originating from commercial farms should be used as an additional criterion
