The development of methods for the correct estimation of tree biophysical variables using remote sensing imagery is presented. Field campaigns were conducted to measure Plant Area Index in 2003 and 2004. They included measuring plant area density, defined by crown transmittance, projected crown area, and crown volume on 95 trees located in Jaén and Córdoba. Multispectral images were acquired with the CASI airborne imaging spectrometer at 1 m spatial resolution and 7 spectral bands. The QUICKBIRD satellite images have 2.5 m spatial resolution and 4 bands (multispectral mode) and 0.6 m spatial resolution and 1 band (panchromatic mode). ; The multispectral and panchromatic CASI and QUICKBIRD images enabled the application of automatic algorithms for olive crown delineation, studying the validity for estimating projected crown area. ; Structural vegetation indices were calculated to study their relationships with crown transmittance. Results demonstrate that the methods proposed were successful for imagery at the satellite scale.
