Since 1950, most of the Swiss sheep pastures are no longer shepherded. Since 2003, the Swiss Government encourages rotational grazing and permanently-shepherded flocks, with subsidies for summer pastures. This paper presents part of the results of a study on the management of two high-altitude sheep pastures with rotational grazing. The pasture is subdivided into paddocks with electric fences. During three years, the work needed to mount, maintain in summer and dismantle the fences in autumn was taken into account, as were the difficulties and the solutions found. At the same time, the sheep behaviour, pasture intensity, vegetation present and its development were observed. The study allowed recommendations to be established for the use of the fences in mountain pastures and the cost and impact on pasture and vegetation to be determined
