Effect of the grassland greenness-growth burning and crop seasons on the cation saturation of the soil sorption complex and on the ionic balance of hay

Between 1999 and 2001, on the brown alluvial soil in the Plonia River Valley near Kolbacz (Poland), the vegetative-static experiment was on to what extent the burning and crop seasons affected the greenness growth of young corn and grass. The research revealed that contrary to the conventional wisdom the controlled burning of meadow vegetation might be of benefit for economy and environment as well (by cutting the natural environmental losses). Obviously such grassland burning also entails the negative effects, as the decline in the hay crop and in the content of protein, crude fiber and chlorophyll a of hay. But seasonal burning of the grassland greenness-growth produces the beneficial effects, too: content of both the dry matter and hydrolyzed carbohydrates is increased in response to an autumn-burning, whereas a spring-season burning results in an increment of basic proteins, carotenes and chlorophyll b of the greenness-growth hay. It was therefore decided than ionic-equilibrium elements, i.e. (C:A), (C-A), [(C(C-A)] and (C sup(+):C sup(2+)), relevant to the greenness growth of young corn and grass, should be estimated on a regular basis and be seriously taken as the indices of both the crop output and the quality of greenness-growth hay
