The field experiment was carried out in the years 1994-99 at the Experimental Station in Zawady (Poland). The influence of organic fertilization (farmyard manure, rye straw, rye and winter vetch grown for green manure) and liming on the content of organic carbon in soil was investigated. Moreover, the effect of vegetables cultivated in the successive years after fertilization and soil liming on the level of organic carbon were determined. On the basis of the results it can be concluded that in the first year the effect of the use of rye as a fertilizer was the same as that of farmyard manure applied in the dose of 60 t/ha, while in the next two years it was even better. Liming used together with organic fertilizers effect increase the content of organic carbon in soil in the first year after fertilization
