Monitoring abundance, population vitality and control of Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) in Serbia during 2003-2005
2006

Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) had five outbreaks of acute type in Serbia (1945-1950, 1952-1957, 1961-1966, 1995-1999, and 2003) during the last sixty years. In the progradation year (2003) Gypsy moth occurred on about 143,000 ha of forests in central Serbia and 17,000 ha in Vojvodina Province (Serbia). In 2004, the outbreak cumulated i.e. Gypsy moth overpopulation extended to about 347,000 ha of forests in central Serbia and decreased to 14,000 ha in Vojvodina Province (Serbia). In August 2005, the detailed inspection of permanent and temporary sample plots as well as the sampling points, and the march-route survey of private forests show that the Gypsy moth infestation was identified on 64,000 ha, which is five times lower than in the previous year. It should be emphasised that, in the regions where the Gypsy moth suppression was performed in the larval stage, the freshly oviposited egg masses were not detected by this control, or the infestation intensity was light. The above refers to east Serbia, where a signficant increase of density has occurred this year, so in 2006, if the Gypsy moth is not suppressed, we expect total defoliations in broadleaf forests.
