Field crops residues represent abundant biomass, which play importance role in the cycling of elements in agroecosystems, especially when insufficient amounts of organic fertilizers are applied. Therefore, removal of crop residues from fields or their burning in the field can be detrimental for conservation of soil fertility in the long term. Crop residues, apart from being organic matter, have a relatively high content of elements essential for plant nutrition, which are completely or partially lost when burned. Having in mind the importance of crop residues for elements cycling in agroecosystems and their favourable effects on soil fertility, it is not appropriate to estimate their value only on the basis of the energy gained through their burning. In this paper we stress the importance of field crops residues for the cycling of carbon and other essential elements in the agroecosystem in the context of soil fertility conservation.
