In this study, the ability of selected Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria to grow in the presence of higher concentrations of selenite was evaluated. Five strains of Acetobacter sp. were tested in particular. Out of them only strain A. pasteurianus 3614 was able to grow at selenite concentration up to 56.8 g/l. Out of ten analysed Bacillus cereus isolates, the best growing strain utilized selenium at concentrations up to 3.5 g/l. Accumulation of selenium in various bacteria and its distribution in cell structures were also studied. Among the 17 bacterial species studied, Acetobacter sp. incorporated up to 39% of selenium in cell structures. On the other hand, Bacillus cereus incorporated 5%, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Flavobacterium brevi, Klebsiella oxytoca, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus feacalis, Trigonopsis variabilis from 1 to 5%, and Serratia marcescens less than 1%.
