The paper is aimed at assessment of the likely exposure of the population of Slovakia to contaminants. The study is oriented to the calculation of the intake of contaminants to a human organism from food, respecting tolerable maximum limits of individual contaminants as defined in the Food Code of the Slovak Republic. Contaminants in food at levels of 100, 90, 50 and 25% of the limit were taken into consideration. The calculated intakes for an average inhabitant estimated by means of real food consumption patterns were compared with values of acceptable intake. The total number of assessed contaminants was 77 out of which 12 contaminants will be further evaluated considering their real intakes, which means assessment from the point of view of their real occurrence in food and beverages.
