Trichinella pseudospiralis has been recorded for the first time in the territory of Slovakia. The pigs in the large scale breeding, synantropic animals and domestic carnivores were found to be infected with this species. The peculiarity of T. pseudospiralis is the absence of capsule formation surrounding larvae localised in striated muscles. The species is highly pathogenic for humans and is the only species from the Trichinella genus capable to infect birds. It can be thus transmitted throughout great distances. It is supposed that formation of the domestic cycle in the concerned breeding was established as the consequence of inadequate sanitary conditions, insufficient nutrition, cannibalism and rats overdispersion represented the key link in the epizootological chain of the domestic cycle of trichinellosis. To eliminate the risk of the spread of the parasite, the veterinary control measures and preventive strategies for the human health protection and eradication of the source of infection in the breeding and in synantropic populations have been adopted.
