The important assumptions of membership in European Union are competitive markets and functioning and competitive enterprises too. The enterprises particularly of food industry with their specifics will have to fulfil requirements of single European market. A significant and critical position in the food industry belongs to the dairy, meat and poultry industry. Slovak enterprises from these three processing branches of food industry must as soon as possible revaluate their present production capacities to decrease stood idle ones. A diversification and innovation of processing programme, a specialization of enterprises and a development of regional and specific products can help Slovak producers to increase their competitiveness.
