The application of the honey bee in the agriculture of Province of Vojvodina [Serbia]

The honey bee products as a pollen, propolis, royal jelly, vox and poison are of direct benefit to the beekeepers. However, the main values of the honey bee is not only in their products, but in their significant role in flower pollination. The sunflower plantations in the Province of Vojvodina (Serbia) amount to 184000 ha, mostly in the Banat area and the yields of this entomofile plants directly depend on the visits of insects. For the purpose of increasing efficiency of the sunflowers hybrid seeds pollination, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia, performs the planed angagement of the beekeepers. They use 2-4 hives/ha, depends of the line attractiveness. It is necessary to arrange the hives in groups with 200 m distance, along the edge of the plantation. The AIC Becej, has been using 850 colonies for the hybrid seeds pollination and for their own needs they produce 200 swarms of bees as well as 1500 queens each year. The estimated annualy production in the Province of Vojvodina is 1,1 million kg of honey, 150000 kg of vox, 13000 kg of pollen and around 1000 kg of propolis, while the 70000 bee colonies cover this area.
