Xerophilous grassland habitats on loess are extremely rare in Slovakia and occur only in fragments in the intensively exploited agricultural landscape. In the framework of our case study we mapped this type of pannonic loess grasslands and we were researching the possibilities of their sustainable use in the locality of Haj in Slepcany (Zlate Moravce District, SW Slovakia). The landscape-ecological importance of this habitat was evaluated (it increases the ecological stability of the landscape and enriches the landscape structure and scene), including biological diversity of organisms (rare species included), synanthropism, current land use, sources of threatening the habitat and the relationship of existing types in dependence to a given locality. On the basis of collected data a long-term sustainable land use was proposed (removal of expanding trees and shrubs, mowing, grazing and regulated local burning of dry hay).
