This paper evaluates the significance of information systems in pig farming. Five programs (Mikrorep, Super-prasnica, ASR Animals, Codex Animals and Pig-Plan) were selected to assess. Several evaluation criteria were proposed to measure efficiency in software quality. Focus was oriented on the function, reliability, efficiency, maintainability, flexibility, portability and user friendliness. The evaluation matrix shows the results. The qualitative findings of the research are focused on what should be done to have better results in pig farming using software. Application of data warehouse could be beneficial to have a database about the key efficiency indicators in pig farming. It has been proposed to set up this database, which can be used to determine the economic efficiency of pig farming. Data warehouses are important for farmers, because they provide a bottom line for comparison with the competition. The database should provide standards for raring, economic cost-benefit analysis, reports for farmers, mean, standard deviation for each parameter, and percentile distribution for each value with regards benchmark. Also the general framework of information systems in pig farming is outlined. Internal and external factors of production are described and their importance is emphasized. Profitability parameters were determined which result from the lack of managers, time, motivation and skills. The economic value of information systems comes from the improvement of managerial decision making, because the software delivers alternative solutions, exact timing of biological processes and allows to control higher number of animals. Appropriate software selection is based on purpose, work scale, information system type, readiness and management experience. This can be supported just by effective management information system for administration and control.
