Production of Trichoderma harzianum Rifai biomass and its application to control leaf blight of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn.

Fungal anthagonists Trichoderma spp. were isolated from 23 leguminous field in 5 provinces in the southern part of Thailand, and 426 isolates of Trichoderma spp. were found. The isolates were screened for their effectiveness inhibiting growth of Rhizoctonia solani, the cause of leaf blight disease of Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea). T. harzianum strain TNl 54 was found to be effective fungal antagonists. Thus, TNl 54 was chosen to produce antagonist inoculum and biomass. Production of TNl 54 biomass were developed using different substrates, sorghum seed, mesocarp fiber of oil plam, dust of medium density fiber board (MDF) and dust of particle board (PB). The efficacy of these antagonists were tested in the control of leaf blight disease of Bambara groundnut under greenhouse condition. It was found that TNI 54 cultured on MDF provided the greatest effectiveness in the controlling leaf blight disease in all application times.
