Roles and activities of farmer associations as perceived by governing committee members in northeastern provinces

Two hundred and sixty eight governing committee members of 90 farmer associations in Roi-Et, Kalasin and Maha Sarakham were randomly selected and interviewed to obtain their opinions on roles and activities of the farmer association. It was found that procurement of agricultural production inputs for the members, and purchasing of agricultural produces from farmers at better price and conditions were perceived as the two most important roles of the farmer association. Activities of farmer association conducive to successful role performing included accurate and transparent accountancy practices on business of the associations, and acquiring financial and technical supports from the local administrative organization, the Tambon Administrative Office. The important characteristics of a successful farmer association included having capable, honest and respectable governing committee members.
