Breed-, age- and gender-related features of phagocytic activity in goats during the spring
2007
Semerdzhiev, V.
The experiment was performed in March-April 2006. Purebred goats from the Bulgarian Dairy breed (BDB), reared in Troyan and Stara Zagora, purebred Anglo-Nubian, Toggenburg and BDB bucks; BDBЧToggenburg and BDBЧAnglo-Nubian doelings, bucklings and goats, as well as in local crosses reared in Bogomilovo, Stara Zagora, were studied. The phagocytic activity in goats was determined by the method of Valchanov (1956) and included the phagocytic index PI (percentage of phagocytized leukocytes) and phagocytic number PN (average number of bacteria phagocytized by one leukocyte). It was found out that the phagocytic activity in goats depended on the age, gender and breed of animals. As a whole, the values of the phagocytic index were similar in 1-year-old doelings and bucklings whereas phagocytic numbers were higher than those in adult goats and bucks. The phagocytic activity was generally higher in male animals compared to females from all studied age groups. The correlation between both parameters was moderate to significant.
