Problems and prospects for hazelnut cultivation in Bulgaria

The present article discusses the major problems and prospects for hazelnut cultivation in Bulgaria. The more important issues that have been paid attention to are as follows: tendencies in the world hazelnut production and demand, strong and weak points, advantages and drawbacks of hazelnut cultivation in Bulgaria and its development as a business; diversification of agriculture through hazelnut plantations; suitable regions for hazelnut cultivation; use of grafted planting material; productive capacities of hazelnut sorts that are well adapted for the conditions in Bulgaria; expenses and results from hazelnut cultivation and necessary dimensions of the plantations for ensuring a satisfactory income for the producers. Based on the presented results, it is claimed that hazelnut cultivation can be a successful business under the conditions in Bulgaria under certain circumstances, some of which are discussed in the article.
