Dietary therapy for diabetes in companion animals
2007
Girginov, D.
Dietary therapy is essential to the successful management of diabetes mellitus in hu¬mans; however, dietary therapy in the management of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats has received minimal attention despite the frequent in¬ability of exogenous insulin to maintain good glycemic control. The initi¬ation of dietary therapy in conjunction with insulin injections has reduced daily insulin requirements, improved glycemic control, and apparently decreased the frequency of diabetic complications in many diabetic canine and feline patients. The factors that should be considered when formulating a dietary regimen include the correction and prevention of obesity, the establishment of an appropriate feeding schedule, and the selection of diets that minimize postprandial hyperglycemia and enhance the actions of insulin.
