Research results of the influence Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations of environmentally hazardous metals on the level of SH-containing compounds in green leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were presented. Investigation of dependence of SH-containing compounds on cations concentration was realized on green 7-days old barley plants incubated in the solutions containing Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations and on the plants grown on sandy soil containing cations. It was shown that both incubation of barley leaf pieces in Cd2+ and Pb2+ solutions and plant growing on soil containing the studied cations caused the increasing of the level of cellular SH-containing compounds. It was assumed that the increasing of SH-containing compounds took place mainly by means of phytochelatins increasing because their synthesis could be induced by Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations. SH-containing compounds, especially phytochelatins, together with Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations formed complexes. At the same time in the spectrum of water extracts absorption of plant leaves there was found the arm in the zone 308-315 nm which increased the fluorescence of monobrombimane according to the increase of cations concentrations in solutions or soil used for plants incubation. It was supposed that heavy metals cations induced the synthesis of SH-containing compounds and jointly produced the stable complexes causing the detoxification of cations. Research results could be used for the working out of the method of monitoring of phytochelatins pools and for the assessment of plants potential ability to heavy metals detoxication
