Novogrudok upland located in the western part of Belarus in comparison with other bordering regions has its own climatic, edaphic and phytocenological differences. Temperature dynamics in the most root-saturated soil layer of studied phytocenoses (orpine and bilberry oaks, orpine hornbeams, orpine pines, orpine and bilberry birch forests, orpine aspen forests, orpine and bilberry lime-tree forests) is investigated. Influence of the climatic and soil conditions on the width of forest trees annual rings is determined. In conditions of upland soils the most widespread orpine and bilberry forest types can be characterized by the insufficiently favorable temperature regime in the period climate warming. In the upper root-saturated layer (0-30 cm) the soil heating was higher that the temperature in the period of the beginning of the intensive growth of roots (9 deg C) only in the end of May and in some years and in the middle of June. Probably, the insufficient heat supply of forest plants in the beginning of the vegetative period to some extant defines the direction and intensity of short-term and long-term variability in the vegetative cover, which is revealed in the reduction of the area of broadleaf forests and increasing of dark coniferous ones and forests of small-leaved deciduous species
