Comparative analysis of the activity of the system of heavy metal detoxification, namely SH - compounds, glutathione reductase (GR) activity, glutathione pool and quantity of sulphide complexes of phytochelatins (PC) with metal cations in different varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings was realized. The state in barley seedlings under influence of Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations was investigated. It was shown that seedlings of more resistant plants of Dzivosny and Syabra varieties contained higher amount of reduced glutathion (GSH) and SH - containing compounds, had higher ratio of reduced/oxidased glutathione (GSH/GSSG) and higher activity of GR in comparison with the sensitive plants of Gonar and Tutejshy varieties. Barley crops growing in the conditions of Cd2+ Pb2+ presence caused the increasing of the above mentioned parameters as well as the induction of phytochelatins synthesis and formation of PC complexes with cations. At the same time, the maximum GR activity and the level of complexes of PC with cations were practically identical for the resistant and sensitive plants. It was supposed that the evaluation of barley resistance to heavy metal cations could be realized on the control group of crops using the parameters of intracellular protection system such as the level of GSH and SH - containing compounds as well as the GSH/GSSG ratio and activity of GR
