Fertigation of greenhouse cucumber under saline conditions
2006
Papadopoulos, I.
The development of agricultural systems, which are characterised by high efficien¬cy with respect to water and fertilizer use and environmental friendly, is an explicit pol¬icy of the European Union. As agriculture is by far the larger user of water, the devel¬opment of such systems and proper management of the available resources are particu¬larly important in countries of the semi-arid region where water resources are limited. This work presents the results of two experiments concerning irrigation-fertigation of greenhouse cucumber under saline conditions, and was part of the EU project HORTIMED (ICA3-CT-1999-00009). Irrigation with 370 mm of water over the period 1st December to mid May proved sufficient for maximum yield. Irrigation with saline water reduced yield, in comparison to irrigation with water of low salinity, while the application of excess water for leaching purposes was beneficial. Fertigation of phos¬phorus proved to be superior to soil application of P at planting time. Differences in yield were always due to the number and size of fruit produced.
