Liquid-fertilizer induced stomatal opening of Rhoeo discolor leaves

Liquid fertilizer is applied by spraying onto the leaves and/or shoots of plant. Expectation of this method is to send the active compounds directly to the leaves-independent of root absorption that the compound be taken by the leaves through the stomata pores. It is suspected that active influx mechanism is more important than simplast or apoplast transport mechanism, This study was to look for evidence of possible mechanism in which the liquid fertilizer was involved in stomatal opening. The study was based on stomatal opening bio assay using abaxial-epidermal strip, and senescence assay of Rhoeo discolor leaf. The result strongly suggested that liquid fertilizer induced stomatal opening in concentration dependent manner, through phytohormone-like mechanism, involving activation of ion K channel, ion Na+/ion H+ channel and cGMP up regulation. The liquid fertilizer was also slightly involved in the retardation of leaf senescence.
