Sire evaluation for growth and fleece yield traits using animal model in Avikalin strain of sheep
2006
Ahmad, M. | Singh, C.V.
Data consisting of 1313 lambs records, spreading over a perod of 22 years (1980 to 2001), were used for the present study. Based on BLUP values obtained from model 8 of least squaremeans (BLUP) and univariate REML animal model (BLUP 2) were considered for ranking the sires. Sires (106) were evaluated for body weights at birth (BWT), weaning (WWT), 6-months(6-WT), 12-months(12-WT) and first greasy fleece yield (GFY1). The general mean(+SD) for all the 5 traits were 2.95+0.67, 15.43+2.70, 21.44+3.62, 26.02+4.31 and 1.06+0.23 kg, respectively. Superiority of the best sires were 52.43 and 56.61; for BWT, 45.83 and 52.83; for 12-WT, and 41.51 and 61.32; for GFY1 under BLUP1 and BLUP2, respectively. The rank correlations for all 5 traits were significant under model 8 of LSA and univariate animal model. Rangeof sire effect, superiority/inferiority of sires and superiority of best sires were found to be more under BLUP2 and BLUP1. It may, therefore, be concluded that nivariate REML using animal model could be used to evaluate the sire efficiently.
