Rehearsals in tunnel of wind for the improvement of the effectiveness of the pheromone traps of the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae) | Ensayos en túnel de viento para la mejora de la eficacia de las trampas de feromona de Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae), picudo rojo de la palmera

Con el objetivo de mejorar la eficacia del sistema de trampeo olfativo del picudo rojo de las palmeras (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, Olivier), se llevaron a cabo varios ensayos para observar el comportamiento del picudo, teniendo en cuenta el sexo, en condiciones experimentales distintas: color y textura de la trampa, trampa con y sin embudo, ubicación de la trampa, atracción comparativa entre palmera y trampa de día y de noche. Para la realización de los ensayos se utilizó un túnel de viento (2,40 m x 1,14 m x 0,750 m) al que se le acopló un sistema de filmación automático (AXIS Camera Station), con dispositivo infrarrojo, puesto a punto por el Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas Industriales de la Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche. Este sistema permite entre cosas, poder observar el comportamiento del picudo sin que esté el observador presente. Los resultados, analizados en porcentaje de capturas en un tiempo determinado, muestran que: - la colocación de un embudo favorece significativamente la entrada a la trampa (entre 60% y 40% de capturas en función del tipo de embudo contra un 10% sólo para una trampa sin embudo). - Existe una tendencia respecto al color. Las trampas de colores más vivos capturan más que las otras. - La mejor ubicación de la trampa fue la enterrada, con un 80% de capturas, contra sólo un 10% para la trampa con textura rugosa colocada en superficie y 0% para la de textura lisa colocada también en superficie. Se observó también que existen diferencias significativas entre los picudos hembra y macho a la hora de elegir la trampa o palmera: en presencia de luz el 62,5% de las hembras prefieren la trampa a la palmera; al contrario, el 60% de los machos prefieren la palmera. Sin luz, para los dos sexos, la atracción entre palmera y trampa no presenta diferencias significativas.

With the objective of improving the effectiveness of the trapping system of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus,), several experimentations in a tunnel of wind were carried out to observe the behaviour of the weevil, taking into consideration the sex, under different experimental conditions: colour and texture of the trap, trap with and without funnel, in surface or buried trap, comparative attraction between palm and trap with and without light. For the realization of the experimentations, was used a tunnel of wind (2.40 m x 1.14 m x 0.71 m) to which was coupled an automatic filming system (AXIS Camera Station), with infrared device, system implemented by the engineering department of Industrial Systems of the University Miguel Hernández of Elche. This system allows among other things, to observe the behaviour of the weevil without the observer being present. The results, analyzed in percentage of captures after a determined period, demonstrate that: - The collocation of a funnel enhances the entrance to the trap significantly: between 60% and 40% of captures in function of the funnel type against 10% only for a trap without funnel. - A tendency exists regarding the colour. The traps of more alive colours capture more than the other ones. - The best location for the trap is significantly when it is one buried: 80% of captures, against only 10% for the trap with rough texture placed in surface and 0% for that of flat texture also placed in surface. It was also observed that significant difference exists between the female and male weevil behaviour when they have the chose between a trap and a palm: in presence of light, 62.5% of the females prefer the trap to the palm; on the contrary, 60% of the males prefer the palm. Without light, for the two sexes, the attraction between palm and trap doesn't present significant difference.
