Effects of crop rotation and wheat residue management on yield and agronomic characteristics of corn

Abstract In order to study the effects of crop rotation and wheat residue management on yield, some agronomic characteristics, and properties of soil in second croping system, an experiment was carried out in Experimental Research Farm of Orzoiyeh in Kerman during four years (2000- 2003). Randomized complete block design in split plot were used with four replications. Wheat residue management with four treatments (unburned residue, burned and unburned residue every other year, collecting residue, burned residue) were considered as main plots, and crop rotation with three treatments (1- wheat- cotton, Wheat- corn, 2- wheat- Soybean, wheat corn, 3- wheat- corn, wheat- corn) as sub plots. Based on results of this study yield and yield components, kernel protein, plant height, organic carbon, uptake phosphorus, and bulk density in soil were not affected by wheat residue management treatments, but uptake potassium in soil was significant. Grain yiel d in unburned residue treatment was 1150 kg/ ha higher than burned residue. Organic carbon in unburned and burned residue treatments were % 0.65 and % 0.59 respectively. Burned wheat residue had the highest uptake potassium in soil. Yield and yield components were not affected by crop rotation, but cotton in crop rotation had the highest potassium , phosphorus and organic carbon in soil.
