Study on the effect of plant density and application of herbicides on weed interference in maize(zea mays L.)

In order to evaluate plant density effect and application of herbicides on corn – weed interference, an experiment was conducted in split plot in complete randomized block design and four replications in Darab station in 2000 – 2001. In this investigation, the main plots were as follow: 1 – Application of EPTC + antidote Ec. 80% at the rate of 5 liter per hectare (normal dosage), 2- Application of Alacolor Ec. 48% at the rate of 5 liter per hectare (normal dosage), 3 - Application of EPTC + antidote Ec. 80% at the rate of 3 liter per hectare (reduced dosage), 4 - Application of Alacolor Ec. 48% at the rate of 3 liter per hectare (reduced dosage), 5 - Without control and 6 - Full season weed control. Sub plots were different plant density including, 13/3, 8/8 and 6/6 plant per square meter (plant/m2). The results indicated that maximum yield was obtained at the 8/8 plant/m2. The results of this research indicated that none of the weed control treatments could have yield the same as full season weed control, except of lasso herbicide in normal dosage. None of the reduced dosage herbicide treatments in interaction with density could not affect weeds as the same of the normal recommendation herbicide treatments. It was noticeable that increasing of plant density at all levels could decrease the dry weight of weeds in corn field.
