Investigating the application of Salicornia species in forage and oil production.

Vegetation cover is one of the most important factors against, control and mitigation of soil erosion. Saline soils mitigates the stablishment of vegetation cover. Conserving saline soils from water and wind erosion, producing forage, increasing animal production and improving economy need rehabilitation of these regions by halophytes. Water and soil salinity in Iran is one of the most important problems in agriculture and natural resources. High potential evaporation and evapotranspiration, low precipitation, topographic conditions producing closed or semi-closed basins, irrigation with low quality water and improper irrigation and drainage are among the most important factors. Combination of these factors creates vast areas of saline and sodic soils. Increasing pupolation rate and the need for more food and industrial resources, implies the rehabilitation of deserts and their surroundings and more use of saline soils. Salicornia is one of the chenopodiaseae family which some of its specieas has natural habitats in saline lands with high moghavemat against water and soil salinity. S. bigelovii has been introduced by United Nation Environment Protection (UNEP) as one of the most important forage and oil resources in saline lands that are not arable with other vegetations. The seed meal left after pressing out most of the oil anf the forage contain 33-43% and 4-6% crude protein, respectively which provids a part of animal food program. Unfortunately, there is no any research on recognition of salicornia species and their effect on saline soil conservation in Iran. In this book beside introducing salicornia species in Iran and comparing with one introduced by UNEP, conserving soil, producing forage and oil with this strategic vegetation will be investigated. :
