The First Report of the Rose Scale Parasitoid Wasp, Aphytis hispanicus Mercet (Hym.: Aphelinidae) From Iran

Rose scale, Aulacaspis rosae (Bouche) (Hom.: Diaspididae), is an important pest of rose bushes. It is generally assumed that it originated in the Palearctic region but it is now widely distributed in many parts of the world. These scales are frequently found in masses on the bark at the base of the plant, and feeds on the phloem with piercing – sucking mouthparts. Rose scale is an oligophagous pest and its hosts generally belong to the genera of Rosa sp. and Rubus sp. (Rosaceae), which the first one is more important host. This pest is attacked by some parasitoid wasps in the nature. In this study heavily infested stems of rose with A. rosae were collected during the atumn of 2002 in Tehran Province to identify the parasitoid wasps. The stems of rose were kept in insect cages at room conditions. Emerged wasps from field samples were presserved in 75% ethyl alcohol. The wasps which generally belonged to the genus Aphytis were sent to USA (Dr. Gregory Evans) for exact identification. Its species were identified as Aphytis hispanicus Mercet. According to the litretures it is a new record from Iran . In this study morphological and some biological characters of A. hispanicus were discribed
