Elementary investigation of Irrigation Water Salinity on Yield of Damask Rose ( Rosa damascena) in Kashan

Damask Rose is one of most environmentally tolerance Roses cultivars which has been cultivated in different parts of Esfahan Province especially in various climate zones of Kashan district. The plant has been adapted to various agronomical and horticultural management practices in this region. The increasing utilization of underground water resources and drought conditions of past several years have increased irrigation water salinity, and decreased water quality. In this study the irrigation water salinity and bi-carbonate content of several wells and Ghanats which are utilized for irrigation of Damasks rose Gardens were analyzed. The on site assessment shows that about 30 to 40 hectares of Sadeh-Barzok of Kashan District in Slam-abad and Talkheh-Abeh are irrigated with irrigation water salinity of 3.1 and 5.2 dS/m, and the bi-carbonate content of 14.8 and 8.8 meq/lit, respectively. The averaged fresh rose yield is 2000 to 2500 kg/ha, which is fully satisfactory and economical. Yield reduction is about 25 to 35 percent of similar field irrigated with none saline irrigation water (2 dS/m). This result agrees with the observation in other parts of Esfahan Province in which the Damask Roses are irrigated with poor water qualities, while foreign sources have reported lower salinity tolerance for Damask Rose.
