Water management as a key component of integrated weed management

إنجليزي. Water management within the cropping system is a key factor for an integrated weed management. Soil moisture affects seed persistence and seed dormancy, thus influencing their germination, the establishment of seedlings as well as the competition at adult stage and the number, vitality and dormancy of the new seeds produced by the weeds. The interactions among water availability and competition are very complex and still not fully understood. A research effort in this sector should the be very relevant for the development of new approaches of weed management, such as ecological weed management, aiming at reducing weed density and competitiveness and, in the medium term, to prevent unwanted modifications of the weed flora

La gestione dell'acqua a livello di sistema colturale e, in particolare, l'epoca e la modalità degli apporti idrici sono a tutti gli effetti una componente essenziale di una gestione integrata delle infestanti. Lo stato idrico del terreno, infatti, influenza la persistenza dei semi, può contribuire a indurre o interrompere la dormienza regolandone quindi la germinazione, influenza l'affrancamento delle plantule, l'esito della competizione in fase adulta e il numero, la vitalità e il grado di dormienza dei semi prodotti. Le interazioni tra stato idrico del terreno e competizione sono però molto complesse e solo parzialmente conosciute. Un approfondimento delle conoscenze sarebbe quindi molto promettente, in quanto potrebbe consentire di immaginare approcci anche nuovi e non scontati nella gestione delle malerbe. Questi studi potrebbero portare un contributo importante allo sviluppo di una gestione ecologica delle malerbe, che non mira semplicemente a eliminarle, ma a ridurne la densità, a limitarne la competitività e a prevenire cambiamenti floristici dannosi
