Collateral effects of endotherapic injections on horse chestnut wood to control Cameraria ohridella [Aesculus hippocastanum L.; Piedmont]

إنجليزي. Endotherapic injections for tree care are in the news again, to control Cameraria ohridella on horse chestnut. The first appearance of this kind of application of active ingredient on trees was in the seventies, to control the Dutch elm disease and wilt-type disease on plane trees. In spite of all, there are very few reports about the evaluation of the so called collateral effects of the tree endotherapy on living trees. The only aspect usually considered is the callus formation around the injection holes, but this is, indeed, only one among many physiological responses of the trees. The main goal of our work was to study the most important risks related to different endotherapic techniques on horse chestnut trees: introduction of potentially pathogens organisms, tyloses, wood degradation and wood staining. Wide portions of stained wood were observed into the stems irrespective of the type of treatments, sterile water included. Amorphous materials were observed within the vessels, always in correspondence with the stained wood and with a chemical composition similar to the cellular wall. Fungi and bacteria, probably introduced into the vessels through the injections, were associated exclusively with stained wood portions. Only non pathogenic fungal taxa were observed. The effects on the stems seem to be related to the endotherapic technique itself rather that to the injected chemicals

Negli ultimi anni si è assistito ad un notevole ritorno delle applicazioni endoterapiche, già sperimentate negli anni '70 principalmente contro le tracheomicosi, per cercare di contrastare la diffusione di Cameraria ohridella su ippocastano. Tuttavia, rimangono ancora pochi gli studi effettuati per valutare gli effetti collaterali delle iniezioni endoterapiche e, in tal senso, non può ritenersi esaustiva la valutazione, normalmente effettuata, della risposta fisiologica della pianta solo in termini di cicatrizzazione o meno del foro d'iniezione. Scopo del presente lavoro è stato quello di studiare gli effetti secondari (rischio d'introduzione di organismi potenzialmente patogeni, occlusione dei vasi, manifestazioni di processi cariogeni) dell'applicazione di diversi principi attivi, con differenti tecniche d'applicazione endoterapica, sul legno d'ippocastano. Vaste porzioni di legno imbrunito sono state rilevate in tutte le piante trattate, indipendentemente dal tipo di trattamento, compreso l'uso di acqua sterile. Nei lumi vasali, in corrispondenza delle porzioni alterate, sono state riscontrate formazioni con struttura non cristallina, ma amorfa, e composizione chimica analoga a quella della parete vegetale. L'iniezione dei preparati nelle piante è stata causa d'introduzione di organismi estranei: funghi e batteri sono stati osservati e isolati dai tessuti legnosi alterati e mai da quelli sani, anche se i funghi riscontrati non paiono essere patogeni. Infine, gli effetti osservati sui tronchi sembrano essere associati alla tecnica endoterapica in sé, piuttosto che alla fitotossicità dei preparati
