إنجليزي. The main trend in European orchard design today is to increase planting density. High density planting (HDP) in pear is expanding due to the widespread use of quince rootstocks to reduce tree size and induce early bearing. However, since HDP entails high outlays, the break-even point occurs at 5 to 8 years after planting. Research and development must advance to upgrade tree efficiency via the use of dwarfing or semi-dwarfing quince or pear clonal rootstocks, the most suitable stock for HDP being quince C. The planting density with quince C can range from 4,000 to 13,000 trees/ha, but the level of management practices and inputs must be high to avoid loss of tree efficiency. For densities ranging between 2,000 and 3,000 trees/ha, the main quince stocks are BA29, which has become less popular today, and the new Sydo. New quince stocks with vigour similar to quince C are the East Malling selection QR193-16, marketed as MH, and Adams. The latter is characterised by a vigour similar to Sydo; the former has a 10-15 higher vigour than quince C. The most important stocks for LDPs are seedlings. The clonal seedlings from the OHxF series include some especially interesting genotypes like OHxF40. Many training systems are suitable to increase planting density, especially the V and the vertical axis systems. New ideas regarding tree shape include plants with 2 or 4 axes so as to divide the vigour over more branches. Nurseries can provide pre-formed trees with two axes (Bibaum), ready to be planted or, alternatively, knip the trees for spindel

L'alta densità nei moderni pereti si sta diffondendo grazie all'impiego dei cotogni, portinnesti capaci di ridurre la dimensione dell'albero e di anticipare l'entrata in produzione. Le densità d'impianto sono molto variabili ed è possibile trovare frutteti con meno di 1.000 alberi/ha fino a 13.000 alberi/ha. E' da evidenziare come l'impiego di portinnesti nanizzanti abbia portato a un aumento dell'efficienza dell'albero e, tra i portinnesti più adatti alle densità d'impianto elevate, si distingue il cotogno MC, che diventa l'unico utilizzabile quando si superano i 4.000 alberi/ha. Per densità comprese tra 2.000 e 3.000 alberi/ha il portinnesto principale è il cotogno BA29, che attualmente sta diventando sempre meno impiegato, perché si preferisce il cotogno Syda, più rapido nella messa a frutta e con meno problemi di moria. Tra i nuovi portinnesti con vigore contenuto, interessanti sembrano QR 193-16, commercializzato con la sigla MH, e Adams. Il primo è caratterizzato da un vigore intermedio tra MC e MA, mentre il secondo è circa del 10-15 più vigoroso di MC. Per le basse densità vengono impiegati franchi o autoradicati. Tra i franchi clonali ricordiamo OHxF40. Molti sono i sistemi adatti per l'alta densità; ricordiamo i sistemi a V e i cordoni verticali. Nuove tipologie d'impianto si basano su alberi con più assi (da 2 a 4), in modo da dividere il vigore su più branche. Recentemente, alcuni vivaisti hanno prodotto alberi bi-cauli direttamente in vivaio, per evitare la cimatura in campo e la conseguente perdita di un anno di produzione.
