Germination and emergence of Xanthium strumarium [weeds; Umbria (Italy)]

إنجليزي. This research investigated some aspects related to seed germination and emergence of Xanthium strumarium L., in the pedo-climatic condition of Central Italy. Results showed that seed longevity in soil was about two years with a burial depth lower than 10 cm and increased to three years with a burial depth of 30 cm. Seeds showed the ability of emerging from a depth of 15 cm, but the main part of emergences came from seeds buried at 2-5 cm. On the contrary, seeds close to the soil surface showed a reduced germination ability. Seed emergence in field was mainly recorded early in Spring, continuing until Summer. All these results suggest that, in case of high infestations by this species, it may be very useful to apply minimum tillage techniques associated to false seed bed preparation, which may strongly reduce soil seed bank an, hence, potential infestation levels

La sperimentazione ha investigato alcuni aspetti relativi all'emergenza e alla germinazione di Xanthium strumarium nelle condizioni pedo-climatiche dell'Italia Centrale. E' risultato che i semi di questa specie sono molto soggetti a fenomeni di mortalità in situ e, se non interrati in profondità, già dopo 2 anni non sono più reperibili. Profondità di interramento superiori a 10-30 cm hanno incrementato la longevità dei semi fino a 3 anni. Questa specie ha mostrato capacità di emergere anche da profondità notevoli (fino a 15 cm), anche se la gran parte delle emergenze sono avvenute a partire da semi localizzati nei primi 2-5 cm di terreno; i semi lasciati sulla superficie hanno invece mostrato maggiori difficoltà di germinazione. Le emergenze in campo sono iniziate precocemente in primavera e si sono protratte per gran parte dell'estate. I risultati suggeriscono che su terreni abbondantemente infestati da questa specie sono consigliabili pratiche di lavorazione minima, che, se abbinate alla falsa semina, possono garantire un sensibile calo delle infestazioni potenziali
