For the production of the short culm lines with low grain protein content, the hybrid lines between major brewing rice variety 'Yamada-nishiki' in Hyogo and cooking rice variety 'Reiho', which has semi dwarfing gene, sd1 , were crossed with 'Yamada-nishiki' or local variety 'Yamadaho'. In the breeding process, the genetic characters were investigated for QTL (qPN-11) for panicle number per plant and QTL (qBP-11) for grain protein content. (1) 'Yamadaho' allele of qPN-11 did not increase panicle number in contrast with 'Yamada-nishiki' allele of qPN-11, although 'Yamadaho' allele of RM206 linked with qPN-11 was the same as 'Yamada-nishiki' allele. (2) From the comparison between phenotypes for panicle number and genotypes of RM206 allele, the 'Yamada-nishiki' allele of qPN-11 was recessive. (3) At the selected lines by the phenotype for panicle number, grain protein contents were investigated. As the result, it was considered that grain protein content will be affected with the modification of the phenotype for panicle number by qPN-11. (4) We considered that local variety 'Yamadaho' is useful material for breeding varieties with low grain protein content.
