Alternaria alternata, causal agent of lenticel rot and leaf necrosis on apple in Italy [Malus pumila Mill.; South Tyrol]

The results of this work indicate the presence in Italian fruit growing areas of pathotypes of Alternaria alternata capable of causing lenticel rots and leaf necrosis on some apple varieties. Such symptoms were more frequently observed on cvs Golden Delicious, Gala, Cripps Pink. In laboratory tests, the filtrates from isolated cultures caused phytotoxic effects on young leaves of the same varieties which showed symptoms in the open field. A. alternata was identified in accordance with Koch's postulates as the causative agent of the symptoms observed in the field

Da alcuni anni in Alto Adige si è manifestata su melo una nuova malattia che determina una maculatura lenticellare sui frutti e macchie necrotiche sulle foglie, che nei casi più gravi possono portare alla loro caduta anticipata. Tali sintomi sono più frequentemente osservati sulle cv Golden Delicious, Gala, Cripps Pink. I risultati del presente lavoro indicano che l'agente di questa alterazione è un patotipo di Alternaria alternata in grado di produrre tossine dannose per alcune varietà di melo. Ciò è emerso dagli isolamenti effettuati sia dai frutti, sia dalle foglie e dalla riproduzione dei sintomi e dal reisolamento su frutti e foglie. I sintomi della malattia sono stati inoltre riprodotti su foglie trattate con il filtrato colturale del fungo
