The bactericidal activities of alkylacyloxybenzoic acids (OBC) and alkylacyloxybenzene sulfonates (OBS), known to be bleach activators generating a series of peracids, were evaluated under washing conditions in Japan. Use at 25 deg C for 10 minutes of a detergent solution including 7.5ppm of decanoyloxybenzoic acid (OBC10) that generates decanoic peracid showed a reduction in Staphylococcus aureus of greater than 5 log. Presoaking at 25 deg C for 10 minutes with a bleach solution including 200ppm of OBC10 showed a reduction in Cladosporium cladosporioides of greater than 3 logsub(10), a greater bactericidal activity than that of the detergent solution. When the bactericidal activities of a series of OBC and OBS were compared, OBC10, sodium decanoyloxybenzene sulfonate (OBS10), and sodium dodecanoyloxybenzene sulfonate (OBS12) showed excellent bactericidal activities. It is assumed that their excellent bactericidal activities can be attributed to their high generation of peracids and high consumption ratio of peracids by bacterial cells.
