Relation of cell growth and phytosterols in cell cultures of Ginkgo biloba

Three kinds of sterols (campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol) were extracted from cell cultures of Ginkgo biloba and beta-sitosterol might be produced by cell growth. Treatment with ancymidol, a sterol synthesis inhibitor, reduced cell growth and sterol content. Addition of beta-sitosterol showed an ability to restore the incorporation of medium components, but not cell growth. Treatment with compactin, a specific inhibitor of mevalonic acid synthesis, reduced both cell growth and sterol amount, and the addition of mevalonic acid could induce cell growth. These results suggest that sterols might be one of the necessary factors for cell growth, while the other metabolites via the mevalonic acid pathway should be considered.
