We selected the extremely early variety in perilla of 12 varieties, 9 of which are domestic and 3 are exotic. The variety has short stem, and is harvested in middle August. So we can avoid low yield caused by typhoon and the late frost. The variety was introduced from China, and has several good characters. The start of flowering is in early July, which is 40 to 50 days earlier than domestic ones. The period from seeding to harvest is 90 days which is shorter than that. The plant height is 1/2 of domestic ones, but the panicle length is long. The best time for seeding is nearly May 25th. Seeding in early May caused delay of growth because of low temperature, and seeding after June 15th caused poor growth because of short growth period. The best furrow distance is 120 cm, the spacing between plants is 20 cm in two rows, and planting density is 833 plants/a. The seed coat is black, and the seed size is large. We can get 1.5times yield as domestic variety, when we seed in late May and plant in above mentioned high density.
