Necessary periods of long-day treatment for achieving five croppings per a year in short-stem cut spray chrysanthemum production

The necessary time periods of long-day treatment for cut spray chrysanthemum production in Japan were determined to achieve five croppings of cut flowers of sufficient quality and more than 65 cm in length and more than 30 g in weight per a year using autumn flowering or summer to autumn flowering chrysanthemums. The number of days from starting short-day treatment to flowering became shorter and stem length become longer as the time period of long-day treatment increased. This treatment required one week, three weeks and two weeks to obtain cut flowers of more than 65 cm in length for May to September flowering using summer to autumn flowering chrysanthemums, for late in December to early in March flowering using autumn flowering chrysanthemums and for late May flowering using autumn flowering chrysanthemums, respectively. Cut flowers more than 65 cm in length were more than 30 g in weight. Although the time period of long-day treatment was decreased to shorten the time period from planting to flowering, the number of head flowers, an important characteristic of the quality of cut flowers, was not markedly decreased.
