Niigata Agricultural Research Institute Crop Research Center has been developing new rice cultivars with unique grain characteristics since 1989. Nine new rice cultivars have been released recently. 'Chigonohoho' and 'Ekkakou' are aromatic rice for blending use. 'Kaoruko' is aromatic rice for non-blending use. 'Koshiguruma' is giant-embryo rice. 'Akigumo' and 'Natsugumo' are low-amylose rice. 'Benisarasa, Benika and Shihou' are colored-grain rice. Production of these unique and high value added cultivars will lead to the activation of agriculture in the semi-middle mountainous regions in Niigata prefecture.
