Selection for increased litter size at birth put higher demands on the ability of sows to nurse large litters (Grandinson, 2003). Traits to characterize the mothering ability are difficult to observe and the recording is not standardized. Piglet mortality varies between systems and farms and remains a problem in spite of using farrowing crates. Even in loose-housed sows, piglet mortality tends to be a greater problem (Damm et al., 2005). The objective of the study was to analyze the genetic background of different traits to characterize mothering ability of sows and quantifying their relationships to reproduction traits.
