Recent development in the use of botanical molluscicides against golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculata)

This review covers recent developments in th use of botanical molluscicides to control golden apple snails (GAS, Pomacea canaliculata), which attack rice fields in major rice-producing countries. Despite many advances in the use of botanical molluscicides against freshwater snails that transmit severe diseases like fasciolasis and schistosomiasis, little research has been done regarding GAS. Moreover, the research has not resulted in the development of commercial molluscicides, and at present there are still no real alternatives to synthetic chemical molluscicides such as niclosamide. Within the most studies compounds, saponins appear the most promising. Based on this, a novel product based on the saponin-containing plant Chenopodium quinoa (quinoa) is presented. The product controls GAS at lower doses than those that harm nontarget species such as fish, and shows no phytotoxicity towards rice. It can be readily produced on an industr ial scale, and at present more toxicological and efficacy studies are being conducted to attain registration in different countries.
