Four cotton varieties viz., Chandi-95, CIM-448, Karishma and NIAB- 78 were crossed to raise six direct and six reciprocal crosses. The F1 generation of these crosses along with their parents was raised to study the gene action for plant height, number of sympodia per plant, number of bolls per plant and seed cotton yield per plant. The results showed that plant 4eight and number of bolls per plant were governed by over dominance type of gene action, while, number of sympodia per plant and seed cotton yield per plant were controlled by partial dominance type of gene action. The variety Chandi-95 appeared to be a good general combiner for all traits under study as it harboured highest array means for all the traits as well as it possessed maximum number of dominant genes as being close to point of origin on Vr/Wr graph. However, the best specific combiners among all crosses were Chandi-95 x NIAB-78 (plant height), CIM-448 x NIAB-78 (sympodia per plant) and Chandi-95 x CIM-448 (number of bolls and seed cotton yield per plant). Therefore, the utilization of aforementioned crosses of the genotypes might prove to be the potential material for improvement of these traits.
