Papilionaceous plants cover almost 15 percent of the world arable land and meet 33 percent of the global human demand for protein. The total amount of nitrogen fixed from the air and reaching the soil is estimated, according to different authors, as ranging from 90 to 139 milion tones, 65 percent of which is a result of bacterial activity. This unique property of studied plants makes it possible to accumulate several or a few dozen and so kilos of symbiotically-fixed N per 1 t of dry matter and to leave behind even 100 kilos of N in plant residues per ha as well as to accumulate 20-40 percent of protein in seeds and in case of some species - also considerable amounts of fat
